Dance Education

Program Overview

This master’s program will prepare you to teach Dance to students of diverse backgrounds, abilities, and interests in elementary, middle school and high school settings. In addition to the rich courses about pedagogy, you will take classes with New York City-based choreographers and participate in international performance opportunities and internships at various venues.

Overview of Dance Education (Video)

Coursework and Clinical Experiences

Courses are offered in the afternoon and evening. Some courses may be available in an online or hybrid format. Select courses have required hours of classroom experience (fieldwork) in a New York City public school. Students also participate in supervised teaching (student teaching and/or practicum) as the culmination of their course of study. Student teaching and/or practicum requires five full days per week for at least one semester.

Eligibility and Admission Requirements

Dance Education Leads to NYS Cert Concentration

• A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a GPA of at least 3.0
• A minimum of 34 credits in dance with a GPA of at least 3.0 in dance
• Links to up to three clips of your professional creative work, between 5 and 15 minutes in total. You must submit at least one sample of your original choreographic work and one sample of your performance work. For each video, include:
  • Title
  • Direct URL Link: YouTube, Vimeo, or similar links set to public, private, or unlisted
  • Description: A brief 1–3 sentence synopsis that explains the context of each piece, how to identify you if there are multiple performers, and any timestamps, if relevant
  • Double-check that all video links have the appropriate permissions set to allow viewing. If a video requires a password, clearly list the password with the submission.
• Two letters of recommendation
• A statement of purpose
• A resume or curriculum vitae
• An audition and interview

Dance Education Assumes NYS Dance Cert Concentration

• A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a GPA of at least 3.0
• A minimum of 34 credits in dance with a GPA of at least 3.0 in dance
• NYS certification in Dance Education
• Links to up to three clips of your professional creative work, between 5 and 15 minutes in total. You must submit at least one sample of your original choreographic work and one sample of your performance work. For each video, include:

Dance Education Assumes NYS Non-Dance Cert Concentration

• A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a GPA of at least 3.0
• A minimum of 34 credits in dance with a GPA of at least 3.0 in dance
• NYS certification in a subject area other than Dance Education
  
• Links to up to three clips of your professional creative work, between 5 and 15 minutes in total. You must submit at least one sample of your original choreographic work and one sample of your performance work. For each video, include:
  • Title

Applications are accepted each Fall semester. Create your Hunter College Graduate Application and select the program “Dance Education, MA”.
