Dual Certification in Deaf and Hard of Hearing and Childhood Education
Program Overview
This master’s program will prepare you to become a teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Graduates of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing program typically become itinerant or classroom teachers for students who are deaf and hard of hearing with a wide range of hearing levels and communication modality, both signed and oral.
Coursework and Clinical Experiences
This program combines general education and Deaf and Hard of Hearing education coursework. Courses are offered in the afternoon and evening. Deaf and Hard of Hearing coursework is delivered online, while general education coursework may be offered in person, online, or in a hybrid format, depending on the course and semester.
In addition to coursework, select classes include required fieldwork hours in New York City public schools. The program culminates in a supervised teaching experience (student teaching and/or practicum), which requires full-time participation—five days per week—for at least one semester.

Eligibility and Admission Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a GPA of at least 3.0 or a master’s degree from an accredited institution with a GPA of at least 3.5
- A liberal arts or science major or interdisciplinary concentration of at least 30 credits
- Two letters of recommendation
- A statement of purpose
Note: International applicants who need an F-1 or J-1 Visa are not currently eligible for this program.
